Hiking is one of the best excursions, as it not only brings you close to nature but also helps you meditate. South Devon is full of natural beauty with its beaches, coastlines, and hilly areas.

Despite being busy and full of tourists in all seasons, you would hardly notice any trash, thanks to waste disposal companies like  https://benandjerry.org.uk/. These hilly areas have many trails that are perfect for walking, hiking, birdwatching, and more. If you are new to South Devon and looking for hiking and trekking recommendations, you are in the right place. This article will cover some of the top trails in South Devon.

Hannaford Road and Revelstoke Drive

Situated in Wembury, this trail is approximately 7 km long with an elevation rise of about 150 m. It takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to complete a round trip. This trail goes through woodlands and coastal landscapes and is good for walking and jogging. It is a loop trail that takes you through the village of Noss Mayo to the hilltop, down to the Yealm Estuary, and back to Noss Mayo. It is also good for bike touring with its partially paved path. The trail is a bit steep to climb at the start but then eases out as you move along.

Dartmouth Castle and Church of St Petrox

Situated in the beautiful landscape of Dartmouth, this trail is 7.5 km long with an approximate elevation gain of 250 m, and it takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete. Passing through Dartmouth Castle, which possesses 600 years of history, this loop trail offers stunning views of the coast. You can enjoy birding, fishing, and hiking while taking in the sights of the Royal Naval College, Dart Estuary, and the port of Dartmouth. You can also stop along the way to explore the castle and church. This trail offers breathtaking views and is equally suitable for people of all ages.

Bolt Head and South Sands

Spanning 8.7 km, this trail in Salcombe offers an elevation gain of approximately 285 m, which could be moderately challenging for elderly people. The trail can be completed in 2.5 hours while enjoying local birds and serene landscapes. It loops around the Devon coast, lush green fields, and picturesque local areas. The trail is open all year, but the best season is spring. It can get muddy and slippery during the rain, so check the weather advisory before visiting.

East Portlemouth and Gara Rock

This is one of the shortest and easiest trails in Devon, but it is no less scenic with breathtaking views. This loop trail has a total distance of 4.5 km with an elevation rise of 140 m, situated in Salcombe. You can enjoy hiking, running, or walking on this track with the chirping of birds in the background. You can walk through the coastline, nature-enriched fields, meadows, and woodlands. If you want to take pictures with blossoming flowers in the background, visit this place during spring or early summer.

Kingswear Coastal and the Watten Circular

The 9.3 km track with an elevation gain of 416 m is one of the largest and most challenging trails, situated in Dartmouth. This trail is open year-round and offers coastal and mesmerizing scenery. The trail takes about 3 hours to complete and is good for fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and historic sightseeing. It is a bit rocky and muddy at some points, so take precautions during the rain. You can capture the beauty of the sea, cliffs, and caves. You can also see Kingswear Castle along the way, which was built in the 15th century to protect Dartmouth Harbour.
