The United Kingdom’s premier touch-up paint retailer conducted a comprehensive research study to uncover which car owners take the most pride in maintaining their beloved vehicles. This study, which delves into the intriguing relationship between car brands and their maintenance habits, sheds light on the unique ways car owners across the country care for their cars.

Utilising sales data from Chipex in the UK and car registration data from the DVLA, Chipex devised an index that rates drivers on a scale of 0-200 based on their likelihood of purchasing touch-up paint. This index provides insights into just how much pride drivers of different car brands take in their automobiles.

Key Insights:

Luxury Brands and Meticulous Owners: Owners of luxury brands such as BMW, Tesla, Porsche, and Jaguar exhibit a strong commitment to maintaining their cars’ paint, indicating a deep sense of pride in their vehicle’s appearance and an intolerance for imperfections. Impressively, 11 out of the 77 car manufacturers included in the study achieved a perfect Chipex Index score of 200, including brands like Porsche, Alfa Romeo, and Aston Martin.
BMW Outshines Mercedes-Benz: In the ongoing rivalry between BMW and Mercedes-Benz, BMW owners take the lead in vehicle appearance pride with a perfect paintwork maintenance score of 200, surpassing Mercedes owners, who scored 130 in this regard.
Electric Cars and Aesthetics: Tesla drivers, who scored 200, clearly prioritise both style and sustainability, reflecting their forward-thinking, eco-conscious mindset.
Everyday Cars and Minor Imperfections: Brands like Vauxhall (39) and Toyota (51), as well as owners of compact cars, adopt a more relaxed attitude towards minor blemishes, reflecting their acceptance of life’s little dings.
Family Cars and Practicality Over Perfection: Family car owners prioritise functionality and the memories created during life’s journeys over achieving a flawless finish. Popular family-oriented SUVs like the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage scored 38 and 37, respectively, indicating a lower inclination to address unsightly blemishes.

Johnny Graham, the founder of Chipex, shared his thoughts on the study:

“The study highlights a clear correlation between luxury car ownership and the quest for perfection. We sell touch up paint for all brands, but there is a need to educate drivers of ‘everyday runarounds’ that our product exists, it’s affordable and is easy to use. Not only can a quick touch up job help retain the value of your car, it can help instil a sense of pride for your beloved motor; whether it’s a top-of-the-range Aston Martin or a humble Skoda.”
